The competition is designed to promote health in the community at a grass roots level. Your application must address the theme of health in the community and you must show how your project raises awareness of how to live more healthily in your area. For example: you could start up a new sports club for teens to increase physical fitness in your area; or run a campaign to increase the awareness of the consequences of substance abuse or even develop a pod cast to address health issues important to you!

• Opening date – 5 December 2011

• Closing date – 23 January 2012

• Short listing announced – 3 February 2012

(provisionally shortlisted applicants will be contacted between 23 Jan and 3 Feb to provide further information via an informal telephone interview)

• Winners announced – 28 February 2012

Basic Criteria

This competition is open to individuals aged between 11 and 21 only. Clubs and organisations cannot apply; however, applications from individuals within a club/organisation setting are welcome to apply, providing the project is run separately from the club/organisation.

Funds will only cover project costs and not direct salaries.

Application Surgery

An open surgery to answer queries on proposed projects and the application process is available on 9th January and 16th January from 9am until 11.30am (via phone – call Ashley Whittley on 07545933823).

Live UnLtd Supports Sed*8 Street Culture Magazine

Stephanie Hegarty successfully set up and launched her own street-culture magazine for the Youth of London, with the content for the magazine being entirely produced by young people who are also given the mentorship of professionals in creative media.

Sed*8 also runs workshops in journalism, photography and graphic design to provide the contributors with the necessary skills to take on further responsibilities with the magazine.

Initially starting out as an online magazine, in late January 2010 Sed*8 Issue 1 was released in print form around London and can be picked up in and around London in Cafes, Boutiques and various venues and if that’s not enough, the magazine is FREE too!

With sections ranging from the latest music reviews, graffiti art found in London, street styles and competitions, Sed*8 goes directly to the streets to report back to the reader about what is happening around them.

It would appear that 2010 looks to be a very promising year for Sed*8 Magazine!

Kelvin set up “FoodCycle’ – a venture which combines young volunteers, surplus food and free kitchen space to create nutritious meals for people affected by food poverty.

Retailers throw out millions of tons of edible food every year due to supply overstock.

FoodCycle redirects this food so it can be used in meals for people that do not have access to healthy foods.

The result? Personal health & well-being increased for thousands of people with proper nutrition.

Food waste is reduced, & young volunteers create positive change in their communities.

Live UnLtd Help Start Kendal Calling -
2010′s Best Small Festival Award Winner

Andy came up with the idea of arranging a festival after being successful in organising a number of gigs for bands in the local area. He chose to make his passion a reality and applied to UnLtd to pay for the advertising of the first ‘Kendal Calling’ Festival.

Kendal Calling has grown from strength to strength each year and aims to attract over 10,000 people this year and has been featured in both the Guardian and Telegraph. Andy really appreciated the support from UnLtd which he explained as being an ‘easier’ funding body to apply to, who also offer a personal touch with their support.

Misfits creating media waves in Newport street gangs

Rico is a shining example of how young people can make a difference to their community. He started making a positive impact through his street football project.

This experience encouraged him to continue his amazing work and has gone onto develop a media project working with young people from Newport, South Wales at risk from or involved in street gangs and its associated problems such as drug dealing and violence.

With local experience and an inspirational attitude, Rico has been able to attract a number of young people and gang members to participate in workshops which cover lyric writing, camera skills, marketing and promotion, plus clothing design; all of which create positive thoughts and messages about young people. The Misfit Movement provides an opportunity for young people to not only support the project, but also promote themselves as young artists within the music industry.

What’s great about Rico’s project is that some of the members have returned to school or college to study media as a result of their experiences and many are no longer involved with the City’s gangs.

He has now registered The Misft Movement as a Community Ltd By Guarantee and has workshops across Newport, Cardiff and Chepstow.

Rico feels that the whole experience has helped him grow in confidence and meet amazing people. The biggest challenge and success was getting the young people from different communities to mix and through music, have now developed lasting friendships.

There are exciting times ahead for Rico; he has been recognised as an emerging rap artist, successfully winning a regional music award. His album, ‘Painting Pictures’ is available to buy and proceeds go towards developing The Misfit Movement and reaching more young people through replicating the project in other deprived areas. If you would like to hear some of Rico’s work, check out the video below.
